Writing Political Postcard - Weeks 5-8

This is my second post of 4 new postcards mailed to MLAs in my project: Political Postcards as a Political Art Form. Please read my first post describing more about the project and how the use of a simple post card becomes more than just a postcard.

Here is a link to the first blog post in this series: Political Postcards as a Political Art Form

My hope is that this project might inspire others to write postcards and take action with this political art form. I have included links at the bottom of this post if you are interested in purchasing any of the postcards.

Week 5:
This week's postcard focused on the theme of federal support to our post-secondary institutions and research. The visual postcard is called "Pink Love Hearts" from Creepy Canary Press' "Colour Your Own Canada" series.

Week 6:

This week's postcard focused on the theme of professional designations and how many of Canadian's professional designations are transferrable through out the country. How would separation impact those designations and the ability to work in different provinces? The visual postcard is called "Black Love Hearts" from Creepy Canary Press' "Colour Your Own Canada" series. This week I used metallic watercolour paint on the postcard I send to Danielle Smith and was very pleased with the results.

Week 7:

This week's postcard was a repeat of the visual postcard due to the wonderful Canadian Maple Leaf and Sugar Shack stamps available from Canada Post.Sugar Shacks (2026): Official First Day Cover - Canada Post. The postcard used is called "Maple Syrup" from Creepy Canary Press and is another "Colour Your Own Canada" series. The written message on this week's postcard deals with Bill 28 and the barriers that the UCP are creating for people to access books in the library. This week, I also decided to start including an MLA from the opposition. This week, I included Naheed Nenshi.

Week 8:

This week's postcard was a postcard created from a drypoint intaglio print I made of a cowboy boot with a Canadian theme. The original intaglio print is currently in a group art exhibition in Fort Macleod at the Fort Macleod Allied Arts Gallery. HOME | Fort Macleod Arts
The postcard is called "Canada Cowboy Love" and is from Creepy Canary Press and is another "Colour Your Own Canada" postcard. This week I tried a mixture of permanent marker and watercolour pencil crayon. The content of the writing for this week's postcards discussed the issue of how much the Alberta October referendum will cost taxpayers. It is a large amount greater than a general election. In addition to Premier Danielle Smith and MLA Grant Hunter, I included MLA Nagwan Al-Guneid from the opposition party NDP. She has a great blogpost on her position that "Alberta is Better Together." You can read her blogpost here: Alberta is Better Together - by Nagwan Al-Guneid

I did receive a response from Grant Hunter’s staff! Not much information in it on his position on Alberta remaining in Canada. It feels like part of the purpose of this project is that the idea of a postcard is that anyone who handles the postcard could read it.
